The Do’s and Dont’s of Choosing a Cosmetic Dentist

Posted on August 30, 2016

As anyone who has ever had a questionable dental experience will tell you, choosing your cosmetic dentist can be tricky. Whether it’s travelling abroad to get the dental work you desire, or choosing something closer to home, the dangers of choosing an ill-fitting cosmetic dentist can have permanent, life-changing results.

Take a look through our Do’s and Dont’s of choosing a cosmetic dentist, based on the questions we are asked by our patients, and our years of qualified experience as cosmetic dentists.

Do’s

Make a List

Before you choose your cosmetic dentist, you should have a good idea of the procedures you would like. Although taking the advice of your dentist on board is instrumental, you should have an idea of the solutions available to you through some initial online research.

Most dental surgeries will also offer a free consultation either online or in person to assess your needs and give you initial advice - do not underestimate the benefits of talking to a qualified cosmetic dentist before making your choice on both the procedure and the surgeon themselves!

Ask for Referrals

Family and friends who have had similar procedures done should be able to give you some sound advice on a cosmetic dentist, either through a good experience they have had, or warnings from others about dentists who may not be up to scratch!

Although the choice is ultimately yours, be sure to heed the advice of others who have been through the same experience. There is also a lot of information and reviews online regarding cosmetic dental practices, make sure to look through these before consulting with a dentist.

View Their Previous Work

Before and after photos can be found on most surgeries websites, and are a good indication of some of the best work they have carried out. Each dentist is different, but the styles displayed on their site will display the quality, skill, and aesthetic of the dentist- you may find you like some styles more than others!

Check Credentials

When exploring dental surgeries, make sure you choose a dentist who has been certified with both the GMC (General Medical Council) and the Royal College of Surgeons. These benchmarks ensure that you will work with a qualified, expert dentist who has had the training they need to make sure your experience is pleasant and professional.

Comfort

One of the most important factors you can base your choice on is how comfortable you feel with your cosmetic dentist and how you feel when in the practice. If you feel like the practice is old, uncomfortable and your dentist doesn’t have the right attitude - do not move forward with the procedure right away. Take your time to figure out whether you trust the dentist to change your life for the better.

Dont’s

Choose the first cosmetic dentist you find

With all the excitement surrounding cosmetic dentistry, it can be easy to choose the first surgery you come across, or the first one suggested to you - this is a big ‘no’! Don’t let the excitement of changing your smile force you into a questionable dental experience. Make sure you take the time to carefully select the right cosmetic dentist for you!

Make a choice based on cost

A lot of people fall into this trap - some travel abroad, some go for the cheapest, quickest options and some make the mistake of paying over and above for an ‘premium’ untrustworthy procedure. Travelling abroad for your procedure can result in a difficult aftercare experience - coming back home and realising the procedure hasn’t gone as expected can cause emergency trips to a dental surgeon and possibly leave you with a worse situation than before. In this case, make sure the practice can guarantee an aftercare programme that suits your needs and covers any damages or mistakes.

Cut corners with your treatment plan

It's easy to leave your dentist’s surgery with a brand new smile and think you’re finished with the process - think again! Aftercare is one of the most important aspects of cosmetic dentistry. The best advice we can give our patients is to carefully and tirelessly follow your aftercare plan - this will ensure your teeth are healthy and the success of the procedure is maximised to give you the best results possible.
